When entering uncharted waters for anyone, it is challenging. To make the process less frightening, it is best to research and be informed about where you are going and what to expect when you get there. The following five things will assist anyone thinking of entering the world of acting without formal education from a tertiary institution.
The pointers were given in the clubhouse, Casting Director, with the room title:do you think anyone can become an actor? on November 27, 2021. The room is available for replay under the club. Here is my understanding of the discussion:
Learn Production Logistics and The Terminologies Of The Business Of Acting And On Set
There are many professions on a set. You should know who they are and then learn as much of the terminologies to enhance your experience. I remember my first night on set in the capacity as a background actor. I asked everyone I met, how they got to be there that night. Yes. My first acting job was for a night shoot. “Trial by fire” was what another actor described my initiation into the movie world that night. I remember asking the person who was summoned to keep the heaters working, what was his title and department. By the way, on that set, the heaters were under the facility department. Steven E. Kimbrough, suggested that you learn production logistics such as what it means when you hear reference to trucking, panning, zooming and scrubbing.
Takeaway is to be curious and learn all aspects of the industry you are now a part of although not formally trained.
Read! Read! Read!
Reading is fundamental! My father always told me that you don’t have to make mistakes when you are able to learn from another. Reading about navigating the industry from experienced professionals in the film and tv industry has no downside. Several books were suggested in the room from Loki D. Wolf, Kimberly Arceneaux and Shazzy Beteal . The authors are Ron Marasco, Sanford Meisner, Daniel Goleman, Bonnie Gillespie, Dan Miguel Ruiz and Konstantin Stanislavsky.
Develop Mental Resistance to Rejection
Mental health is a topic not often discussed in our society. In life you face rejection in many forms. However, if your industry is wrought with it, you need to prepare. This suggestion came from Kimberly. She suggested meditating among other things. Takeaway...just do what is necessary to stay mentally focused and achieve your dreams.
Take Improv Classes
Surely you didn’t think you would enter the world of acting without any apprenticeship. Paul Vato suggested taking improv classes along with acting classes for film and tv. So my fellow background actors that would like to get speaking roles and climb the professional actor ladder, start asking for references to great improv classes in your geographical area.
